I was lucky enough to receive 2 copies of Iris McCarthy's new book called Food Lovers' Guide to Philadelphia. As a gal who was born in Philly then lived her adult life to date in Bucks County Pa (one of the suburbs of Philly) this was a real treat!
Iris is a food writer and blogger who lives in the Philly suburbs. She is a regular contributor to a few of this areas magazines where she writes about the Philly food scene.
Philly is HUGE, it is a mecca of restaurants, pubs, diners, deli's and specialty food stores. Folks rely on what other folks are talking about to help them decide where to go next.
When I was about 22, I decided I was "cool" and wanted to go to trendy clubs and restaurants in Philly, so I would grab a copy of the monthly Philadelphia Magazine, flip to the back section, close my eyes and point at a place...then my husband or friends and I were off and running...checking it off "the list".
Those days have gone, these days my young children are my priority...BUT, I do make time to have some fun.
I am not sure how the tons of tourists Philly attracts decide on where to go...for locals or visitors this book gives you a peek behind the curtain.
If your looking to learning a bit about a place to eat, shop or hang out, whether it be an icon or a hidden gem. Iris does a great job of giving you a peek inside each place. From restaurants to breakfast joints, to farmers markets to cooking classes and tours...it's all in there. She even covers the Philly suburbs a bit...where I have to tell you their are some a-mazing places. I've got the life! Philly is 35 minutes away. I am surrounded by the beauty and bounty of all that is Bucks County, the Pocono's are 2 hours or less away, NYC the same and I can be on my favorite NJ beach in an hour and 20 minutes! Gotta love it!
I love that the book is substantial (273 pages) yet fits in your hand or handbag easily as a constant guide. Thanks to this book, I now have a dozen places on my must list to hit within the next 8-12 months. Thanks Iris!!
